Introduction to HGT Host ServicesHospitality Group Training (HGT) is a not for profit organisation established by the Australian Hotels Association (SA Branch) and the Liquor Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union in 1985. HGT is the largest employer of apprentices and trainees in the Hospitality Industry in South Australia and is committed to assisting the Hospitality Industry with its employment and training requirements.
HGT provides the opportunity for apprentices and trainees to be employed and then leased to host employers for the duration of their Contract of Training, and rotates them between suitable host employers when required. This gives employees the opportunity to work in a range of establishments, giving them a greater diversity of skills and knowledge.
Apprenticeships and
Traineeships include the following;
- Cookery Apprentices
- Butchery Apprentices
- Hospitality Trainees
- Office Trainees
- School Based Apprentices
Advantages of 'leasing' Apprentices and TraineesThe leasing arrangement is flexible and can vary in the time the apprentice or trainee is placed at your establishment, depending on your staffing requirements and the training needs of the employee. You are not committed to the full term of their Contract of Training.
How does it work?HGT only charges the host employer for the productive hours an apprentice or trainee spends in the workplace ie. not 52 weeks in most cases. HGT pays its employee wages and superannuation. HGT then invoice these and other ancillary costs back to the host employer plus GST.
Ancillary costs include annual leave, leave loading, sick leave, Work cover and payroll tax. Should your apprentice or trainee take annual leave, is attending "off-the-job" training, or is on sick leave or work cover, HGT will pay those to them.

Performance ManagementA HGT Industry Consultant will visit each apprentice or trainee in the workplace on a regular basis. The purpose of these visits is to ascertain how each apprentice or trainee is performing across a range of areas. Training updates and training schedules are also provided. Any performance or attitudinal issues are addressed at these meetings and managed to ensure a successful outcome. The perfomance management system consists of warning letters and perfomance action plans. The warning letters are issued when corrective action is identified, in particular, regarding behaivoural issues. Performance action plans are issued to ensure the skill development of all apprentices and trainees is at an appropriate and satisfactory level. These enable HGT to be proactive and put actions in place to resolve any issues before they escalate into a crisis situation.
How long can I keep the employee?Apprentices are available for periods varying from a few weeks up to two years depending on suitability and training opportunities within the host establishment. It is preferred however that an apprentice is leased for a minimum of twelve (12) months where possible, to ensure that adequate learning and skills are achieved whilst at your establishment.
Trainees complete the full contract term with the one host employer, unless special circumstances prevail.
What if the employee is unsuitable?Should an apprentice or trainee not respond to corrective measures, or does not meet the requirements of the host employer, HGT may be contacted and a release date negotiated. HGT requires at least two (2) weeks notice period to enable it to find its employees suitable alternative employment.
