WAGES, ENTITLEMENTS AND OTHER ALLOWANCES

Wages

You are entitled to be paid wages according to the award or agreement you are employed under and these are outlined as follows;

Cookery Apprentice - HGT/LHMU Collective Agreement
Cookery Trainee - HGT/LHMU Collective Agreement
Hospitality Trainee - HGT/LHMU Collective Agreement
School Based Apprentice - HGT/LHMU School Based Collective Agreement

Government Incentives and Allowances

Tools For Your Trade

The Tools For Your Trade payment is a tax exempt cash payment provided to support Australian Apprentices with the costs of training, purchase of relevant tools and other associated costs. The payment is available to Australian Apprentices undertaking a Certificate III or IV qualification which leads to a trade occupation listed on the National Skills Need List.

Eligible Australian Apprentices will receive five tax exempt cash payments to a total of $3800 over the life of the Australian Apprenticeship. These are paid as follows:

  • $800 payable after three months
  • $800 payable after 12 months
  • $800 payable after 24 months
  • $700 payable after 36 months
  • $700 payable on successful completion of the Australian Apprenticeship

Living Away from Home allowance

The Living Away From Home Allowance (LAFHA) is an allowance provided by the Australian Government to help Australian Apprentices including Australian School-based Apprentices who have to live away from their family home. The allowance is available to eligible Australian Apprentices during the first three years of their training.

Australian Apprentices eligible to receive the allowance receive $77.17 a week for up to 12 months, $38.59 a week for a further 12 months and $25 a week for a third 12 months. The allowance is generally paid monthly via direct credit into an eligible Australian Apprentice’s nominated bank account.

Commonwealth Trade Learning Scholarship

You may be eligible for two $500 payments just by undertaking a trade in an area of particular skills need.
These scholarships are for eligible Australian Apprentices who commenced their Australian  Apprenticeship on or after 1 July 2004 in a skill needs trade at Certificate III or IV level with a small or medium employer or a Group Training Organisation listed on the Group Training National Register. These tax exempt scholarship payments are made directly to eligible Australian Apprentices at the end of their first and second years of their Australian Apprenticeship.

Support for Mid-Career Apprentices

Australian Government financial support is available for mid-career workers (aged 30 years or over) to upgrade their skills through an apprenticeship at the Certificate III or IV level in an occupation listed on the National Skills Needs List. The payment is made to either the employer or the Australian Apprentice depending on award arrangements and is set at $150 per week ($7,800 per annum) in the first year and $100 per week ($5,200 per annum) in the second year.

GENERAL EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS

Contract of Training

A Contract of Training is a legally binding contract between the apprentice / trainee and the employer. The contract is the basis of a work-based training arrangement to enable the opportunity for people to develop job skills and gain a nationally recognised qualification. Under the contract system the apprentice / trainee agrees to undertake the necessary training to acheive competence in their chosen field and the employer agrees to arrange for training. The contract is registered with Traineeship and Apprenticeship Services (TAS). TAS is a unit of the Traineeship and Apprenticeship Services Directorate of the Department of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology. TAS manages and administers the Contract of Training system under delegation from the Training and Skills Commission.

Terminating a Contract of Training

After the probationary period of your apprenticeship / traineeship has expired, cancellation of the Contract of Training can only be done by mutual consent between both parties (both the employer and the employee). Approval to cancel the Contract of Training will be granted by TAS upon receipt of a signed request for mutual cancellation. Where both parties do not agree to the cancellation of the Contract of Training the matter is in dispute and is referred to the Grievances and and Disputes Mediation Committee the Committee will make a determination on the matter.

Obligations of Apprentices and Trainees under the Contract of Training System


  • Attend work, observe the conditions of their employment, and follow the lawful directions of the employer.
  • Work towards achieving the qualification stated in the Contract of Training.
  • Undertake training and assessment in accordance with the requirements of the Training Plan.
  • Acknowledge that all on the job instruction and any other material provided by the employer remains the property of the employer.
  • Acknowledge that information obtained from the employer and given in circumstances of confidence must be kept confidential.
  • Not terminate their employment without the mutual agreement of the employer.
The failure of an Apprentice / Trainee to meet these obligations may result in a dispute instigated by by the employer, or subsequent Contracts of Training not being approved.
